Ross Forgan

Position: Group Information Officer
Organization: Clicks Group
Ross spent the first 10 years of his career working for various large law firms in South Africa, where he ultimately made partner and built a practice in commercial disputes, focusing on liquidations and business restructuring. In 2016, Ross joined a technology start-up operating in Europe where he held the role of General Counsel. This coincided with the promulgation of GDPR, and as such Ross developed expertise in data protection and IT related law. In 2019, Ross returned to practice law in South Africa where he held the position of head of technology and innovation for a large multinational law firm. During this time, Ross was seconded to London where he was exposed to the latest developments in legal-technology as well as global trends relating to data privacy. In 2021, Ross joined the Clicks Group initially as a legal advisor focused on servicing the IT department and improving the way that legal services were delivered to the enterprise through the adoption of technology. Shortly after, Ross was also appointed as the Group Information Officer which has the responsibility of ensuring that the enterprise operates in accordance with applicable data privacy legislation. Ross is currently leading the development and implementation of a new enterprise level document creation, negotiation, conclusion, management and analysis operating system that is being built for the Clicks Group.

Session Overview

A Story of Building and Implementing a Home-Grown, Business Focused, Legal-Tech Solution
Legal technology tends to be developed for lawyers, and not for the business.
The Clicks Group, in conjunction with Entrostat, a South African software developer, created ClickDox with the intention to fundamentally transform how legal, compliance and business documentation is created, governed and analysed across the organisation. Unlike many legal technology solutions that are purchased “off the shelf”, or consist of various technologies bolted onto existing technology, ClickDox is a proprietary operating system built specifically for the Group’s operating environment, regulatory requirements and long-term strategic objectives. The principles adopted would equally apply to any large, regulated business that manages legal and compliance processes at scale.
This session will walk you through a highlights real of the journey we have undertaken thus far, including:
• design decisions behind building a solution that considers operational needs and realities, governance requirements and risk environment;
• building the structured data, workflows and governance environment necessary to support sustainable AI-enabled legal operations in future;
• optimising the analysis and reporting on legal data, including defining document metadata and linked metadata, as well as leveraging automated summarisation;
• change management and securing business adoption;
• driving a shift in the perception of a legal department from primarily a control function to a business enabler and problem solver.
Lastly, I will address what skills are required in creating and supporting the legal department and technology of the future.
Three Tangible Learnings
1. How to position legal-tech as a value add in a business to secure executive buy-in;
2. How to manage the noise of fast changing technologies;
3. How to tackle the creation of an AI driven contract and document archive;
