Marco Mendola (UK)

Position: Co-Founder
Organization: Legal Tech in the South West
It’s Marco here, and I am an innovator at heart. I trained as a litigation lawyer in Italy. It did not fit me. So, I moved to the Netherlands for advanced studies in law and digital technologies. Then spent the next decade working across law firms and in-house teams, in the UK, with legal services, tech, and design roles. I am now Innovation Manager at TLT LLP and Co-Founder of Legal Tech in the South West. Nominated for the Innovation Trailblazer Award at the European Legal Innovation and Technology Awards in 2025. What I have learned along the way: transformation projects work when they start with a real problem someone is trying to solve, and often stall when they start with a tool someone wants to deploy. Whether I am running projects, supporting negotiations, leading workshops, or building communities, my work pushes the innovation agenda forward through the relationships I build. I love Lego and my French Bulldog, Rocco.

Session Overview

Future Skills for Legal: Before and After AI, Mapped Honestly
Most conversations about AI and legal skills start from assumptions the evidence often doesn’t support:
AI comes for the routine, low-skill work first.
Exposure to AI means job loss.
The profession broadly agrees on what happens to junior lawyers.
People will pick up new skills on the job.
Each sound obviously true at first sight. However, the latest data and research on the topic seems to contradict some of those areas. What do you think based on your day-to-day experience?
What to expect
We open by putting five assumptions/statements into the room. Agree or disagree, hands up, no hedging. Then we show what the research says, and see who moves. Then it gets practical. At your table you’ll take a real legal workflow and map it twice: before AI, and now. You’ll locate the hours that were freed and decide honestly where they went. Back to the client, into higher-value work, or quietly absorbed and lost. You’ll name what a junior lawyer used to learn doing that work and no longer does. Most sessions stop at that diagnosis. This one ends with what you’d change. You’ll leave with a mapped workflow, a named skills gap, and one concrete intervention to take back to your organisation.
