Session Overview
A Simpler, Safer and Smarter South Africa
Simpler, Safer, Smarter: Solving Real World Problems That Matter
Frontier AI feels like it is now within everyone’s reach. The same models, the same tools, the same promises are available to everyone’s organisation and your competitors alike. So where does durable advantage actually come from? Drawing on more than two decades as a practitioner I will try to cut through some of the stumbling blocks to ask what it truly takes to create value that lasts, here, in our context.
The argument is built on a principle that began as a hackathon idea and became part of our DNA: solving real world problems that matter. It is organised around three talking points, aligned to the discipline of Simpler, Safer, Smarter:
1) Simpler: Keep it simple, but nothing simple is worth solving anymore. AI has made the easy things easy for everyone; real differentiation comes from solving the complex use-cases we could never solve before.
2) Safer: Borrowing from the slogan “Don’t be evil”. As AI grows more pervasive, we cannot cede control of explainability. Where understanding is low, transparency must be high; and sovereignty, privacy and trust must be treated as foundations.
3) Smarter: Models are a cost, but data is an investment. We are learning that execution is important but it creates margins; only data creates a durable moat.
Each point is grounded in a real South African use-case where what we do for our customers have solved real problems that mattered for the country. We highlight what makes us different: a proudly local player that is close to what makes South Africa tick. In an economy where capital is the true constraint, importing IP without localising it in a sovereign way dilutes value; it does not create it.
Three Tangible Learnings
1) Simpler: Keep it simple, but nothing simple is worth solving anymore. AI has made the easy things easy for everyone; real differentiation comes from solving the complex use-cases we could never solve before. Unpacking use-cases that were previously out of reach.
2) Safer: Borrowing from the slogan “Don’t be evil”. As AI grows more pervasive, we cannot cede control of explainability. Where understanding is low, transparency must be high; and sovereignty, privacy and trust must be treated as foundations. Focussing on explainability of impossibly complex models.
3) Smarter: Models are a cost, but data is an investment. We are learning that execution is important but it creates margins; only data creates a durable moat. Talking about how AI-ready data is different from BI-ready data.
