Storage Is Not Governance: Closing the Readiness Gap Before AI
AI adoption in legal is accelerating yet many organisations are discovering an uncomfortable truth: the biggest barrier to successful AI may not be the technology itself, but the environment in which they are asking it to operate.
Legal teams are investing in tools while grappling with fragmented data, uncertain data quality, model hosting locations, cross-border data protection, security risks, unclear governance, vendor fatigue and lawyers who are still learning how to work effectively with AI.
Storage is not governance and buying an AI tool does not make an organisation AI-ready!
This session will challenge the assumption that AI implementation begins with selecting the right technology. Instead, we will examine the often-overlooked readiness work that needs to happen before deployment.
Using a practical legal transformation lens, we will explore six questions every legal function should be able to answer before scaling AI:
Is our data fit for purpose? Are our systems ready? Have we identified the right workflows? Are our governance controls practical? Are our people equipped to use AI responsibly? Can we measure whether it is actually creating value?
Attendees will leave with a clearer way to assess their AI readiness, identify the gaps that could undermine an implementation, and distinguish between an AI problem and an underlying legal operating model problem.
Because the question is no longer simply “Which AI tool should we buy?” It is: What needs to be true for AI to work safely, effectively and at scale in our legal function?”
Three Tangible Learnings
Learning 1: Recognise the difference between having data and having data that is ready for AI. Understand why data quality, access, governance and the wider information environment matter when legal teams consider AI.
Learning 2: Identify the organisational questions that should sit alongside the technology question. Consider how legal processes, systems, governance and people influence whether an AI initiative is likely to create meaningful value.
Learning 3: Reframe how legal leaders think about AI readiness. Move beyond choosing tools and consider the conditions that need to exist for AI to be adopted responsibly, with appropriate oversight and a clear connection to the work legal teams actually do.
