Navigating the Strategic Role of Legal in the AI Era (Look Mom, no hands (just kidding…?)
Artificial Intelligence is no longer knocking at the door of the legal profession, it has already made itself comfortable in the boardroom, our inboxes, and quite possibly our contract reviews. As AI becomes more capable, one question is becoming increasingly more important: where do humans fit in?
From “human-in-the-loop” and “human-on-the-loop” to the somewhat unsettling concept of “human-out-of-the-loop,” this session unpacks what these terms really mean in practice to both in house and law firms and why they matter. More importantly, we’ll explore when human oversight is essential, when it becomes impractical, and when it risks becoming little more than a comforting illusion.
Attendees can expect a practical and engaging discussion on the evolving role of legal professionals in an AI-enabled world. We will examine the legal, ethical, governance, and accountability challenges that arise when decisions are increasingly made or influenced by intelligent systems. Who is responsible when an AI gets it wrong? At what point does oversight become rubber-stamping? And how do we balance innovation with trust?
Drawing on real-world developments, emerging regulatory trends, and lessons from AI governance initiatives, this session will challenge traditional assumptions about risk, responsibility, and the future role of legal counsel.

Learning 1: Learn where humans should stay in the loop, where they can step back, and where being “out of the loop” may be inevitable.
