Andries is trained as a chemical engineer. He started his career at the CSIR, with a focus on water and effluent management. He was introduced to systems thinking and system dynamics in the early 1990’s and found a calling as a system dynamics modeller. In 1994, he founded Dynamic Strategies (Pty) Ltd, a company focused on solving complex problems using system dynamics. In 2007 the whole team joined Toyota South Africa. He enjoys finding elegant modelling solutions to complex practical problems. He is a keen bridge player and avid Meccano collector.
Session Overview
A Sea of Data, But What About the Origin?
We live in a sea of data, but how often do we stop and try to understand where the data comes from. Data in itself is, mostly useless and only comes to life when we turn it into information and insight. The purpose of data is however critical in decision making when we take a process view as our perspective.
In order for data to emerge, we need some process to run. The process itself contains both embedded and external control systems. Effective decision making leverages the raw data to ensure effective operation. However, without understanding how the underlying process is generating the raw data, we can misinterpret and cause worse behaviour in the system.
By better understanding the origin of the data we can turn implicit decisions into explicit decisions. When decision rules and assumptions are explicit, it becomes possible to make decisions resulting in predictable outcomes.
Three Tangible Learnings
1. Process knowledge creates insight and wisdom.
2. Explicit decision making ensures standardisation, consistency and optimisation of 80% of our day.
3. Assigning 80% of our work to automation means we can spend additional time on the 20% that needs human attention, find more improvements and generate more opportunities.
