Session Overview

Transforming Data into Value: NICIS’s Stakeholder-Driven Digital Fabric
Data has become the cornerstone of innovation, yet South Africa faces the challenge of turning abundant digital resources into actionable value. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)’s National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS), through the Data Intensive Research Initiative of South Africa (DIRISA), is actively involved in this transformation by contributing to efforts aimed at building a sovereign data fabric designed to support emerging demands such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). This session demonstrates how NICIS is closing the “Data-Value Gap” by converting raw capacity into strategic national assets that directly serve universities, government departments, and industry partners.
We will explore how NICIS addresses critical pain points including fragmented datasets, high compute costs, and limited interoperability, through “Data Quality by Design,” ensuring information is not only accessible but “AI-Ready” for evidence-based decision-making. Human Capital Development (HCD) is equally central, with federated trust environments and targeted training programs equipping a new generation of professionals to steward South Africa’s digital commons.
Whether you are a researcher applying FAIR and CARE principles, a policymaker evaluating infrastructure, or an industry leader seeking partnerships to enable a competitive advantage, this session provides a glimpse into how NICIS’s cyberinfrastructure serves as a high-yield engine for social equity, innovation, and global scientific leadership.
Three Tangible Learnings
1. Bridging the Data Value Gap
2. The need to build AI Ready Infrastructure
3. Importance of empowering Stakeholders
