Session Overview
From Europe to Africa: Implementing EU AI Regulation in Global Business
The EU AI Act marks a global shift in how artificial intelligence is regulated, setting the benchmark for risk-based governance, transparency, and accountability. While many African businesses are not directly subject to the EU AI Act, its extraterritorial nature, coupled with global trade and compliance interdependencies, makes it essential for legal and digital leaders on the continent to understand its practical impact.
In this session, we will explore what it means to implement an EU-compliant AI governance framework in a global group operating across Europe and Africa. Drawing on real experience from group-level rollout at a multinational, the session offers practical insights on governance, risk classification, organisational readiness, and role definitions. It will also unpack the growing importance of legal teams understanding digital regulation, and why technology law is no longer a niche discipline but a core business function.
Attendees will leave with a clearer view of what the EU AI Act requires, how it can apply outside Europe, and how African businesses can prepare by embedding digital compliance into their legal and operational strategies.
Three Tangible Learnings
– What the EU AI Act requires and how it can affect African operations through group-level or contractual obligations.
– Key lessons from implementing an AI compliance framework in a multinational organisation.
– Why legal teams must now integrate digital regulation into their core skillset to remain business-relevant.
