Maureen Julie is an Asset Maintenance and Planning Management specialist managing the MIS Office within the Chief Engineering Office at TNPA with over 10 years of experience helping maintenance depots streamline maintenance processes to optimized execution. Specializing in maintenance planning and execution, she optimized equipment maintenance by integrating TPM with SAP System through the interfaced modules. This includes TE Germiston Region’s first-time migration from manual reactive maintenance to an SAP-controlled maintenance process approach in 2012. Maureen is passionate about solving maintenance gaps through process alignment and maximising SAP system utilization. She enjoys teaching and coaching outside work.
Session Overview
Rebuilding Reliability: Engineering TNPA’s Shift from Reactive to Predictive Asset Management through SAP S/4 HANA and Smart Maintenance
Efficient asset maintenance and management are essential for the sustainable performance of modern ports, which facilitate over 80% of global trade. Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), like many global port operators, faces persistent challenges linked to inadequate asset management practices, ageing infrastructure, and fragmented maintenance processes. These inefficiencies have contributed to congestion, equipment unavailability, rising maintenance costs, and declining operational performance. This presentation examines TNPA’s current maintenance environment, identifies systemic gaps, and outlines the strategic transformation required to achieve a world‑class, technology‑enabled maintenance and asset management system.
Historical data extracted from the SAP Plant Maintenance (SAP PM) system over a 12‑year period revealed recurring issues including under‑utilization of SAP PM functionality, incomplete or inaccurate asset master data, misaligned maintenance plans, capacity constraints, and prolonged procurement timelines. Additional challenges include reactive maintenance, lack of integrated asset life cycle processes, ineffective contractor performance management, and insufficient condition‑based or predictive maintenance approaches. These factors collectively impair infrastructure reliability and undermine strategic decision‑making.
The desired end state is a fully integrated, proactive maintenance system enabled by SAP S/4 HANA and aligned with global best practices such as Reliability‑Centered Maintenance (RCM), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), and Condition‑Based Maintenance (CBM). Achieving this vision requires standardized planning processes, accurate asset data, long-term (full life span) maintenance strategy cycles, improved budgeting aligned to asset structures, and enhanced skills development for maintenance planners and technicians. Technology adoption—including digital twins, IoT sensors, GIS, and AI‑driven analytics—further supports predictive capabilities and performance monitoring.
Ultimately, the transformation roadmap emphasizes organizational excellence through structured maintenance mapping stages, integrated management systems, improved supply chain responsiveness, and continuous improvement practices. By implementing these interventions, TNPA can enhance asset reliability, extend asset life cycles, reduce downtime, and strengthen port efficiency, contributing directly to economic growth and sustainable port operations
Three Tangible Learnings
Learning 1: 1. The Shift from Reactive to Predictive Maintenance is essential for Reliability and Efficiency.
