Muzi Zim is the Executive Head of Data and Analytics at Hollard International, which operates across Botswana, Ghana, Zambia, Lesotho, Mozambique and Namibia. He leads the team responsible for group data strategy, governance and architecture, working with country teams to put these into practice in ways that meet local regulatory and business requirements. A central part of his role is translating group standards into operating models that work across countries with different data protection requirements, regulatory expectations and technology environments. Zambia provides a useful case study of that challenge. Building a Data Strategy in an Era of Increasing Regulation
As data privacy regulations become more stringent across Africa, organisations are under increasing pressure to demonstrate not just compliance, but robust governance, accountability and trust. Zambia’s data protection regime is one of the toughest in Africa. An active commission, 24-hour breach notification, criminal sanctions for non-registration, and sensitive data that can’t leave the country. For an insurer, that’s not a policy question. It’s an operating condition.
Max Chipenya, Head:IT for Hollard Zambia, shares how his team turned that pressure into the foundation of a working data strategy: building a relationship with the data commission, putting a governance chain in place that gives the business real assurance, with named data owners and stewards in the business rather than the data team, and completing a structured strategy process that moved from compliance remediation through governance design and architecture decisions to honest resourcing choices.
He’ll be in conversation with Muzi Zim, Executive Head of Data & Analytics at Hollard International, on what the regulator asked for, what the team pushed back on, and what we’re currently partnering on.
